Lake Nakuru sits just two kilometres south of the town. This lake is a famous soda lake with many pink flamingos. The nearby national park is a safe place for many animals. You can find over 450 types of birds and 56 kinds of mammals there. Rothschild's giraffes live in this area too. Another amazing site is the Menengai Crater. This is a very large, old volcano that is a nature reserve.

The history of Nakuru goes back a long way. British authorities first named it a township on 28 January 1904. The name comes from the Maasai-speaking people of Kenya. Long ago, people lived near Hyrax Hill. Scientists found archaeological discoveries there in 1926. The city became a municipality in 1952. Later, the first and second presidents of Kenya had homes nearby. The city has also been a very important place for Kenyan politics.

Many different jobs keep the city running.

Farming is a major part of the local economy. Farmers grow wheat, maize, coffee, and potatoes. They store these crops in large buildings called silos. The city also has many factories that make soap and motorcycles. Nakuru is a great place for learning, too. It is home to Egerton University and Kabarak University. Many other campuses and schools are located here as well.

Moving around the city is easy with many paths.

A railway track runs right through the edge of the central business district. This train connects Nakuru to Nairobi and Mombasa. There is also the Lanet Airstrip for smaller planes. The city is a mix of many different cultures and people. Most of the people in the city are from the Kikuyu community. Others include the Kalenjin, Luhya, and people of Indian descent. This mix makes the city a very welcoming place.
