The hills around the city can reach 2,000 metres high. Because the city is high up, the weather stays pleasant. The days are very warm and the nights are nice. Many old villas have beautiful gardens that slope down to the lake. In contrast, the Kadutu district climbs up the hillsides further inland.

Bukavu has a long and changing history. It was part of the ancient Bushi Kingdom. Long ago, the area was called Rusozi. The name Bukavu comes from the Mashi word 'bu 'nkafu', which means a farm of cows.

Traveling around the region can sometimes be a hard job. The roads are often in bad condition because of past wars. Because of this, people use boats to travel on the lake. They use many lakeside wharves to get from place to place.
