The weather here is tropical. It stays warm and wet all year long. There is no true dry season in this area. April is usually the month with the most rain. The average temperature stays around 22.9 °C.

The city is a very busy place for trade. It is a key link between the lake and Mombasa. This works because of its water and rail connections.

The city also has an international airport. This airport has regular flights to Nairobi and Mombasa. Kisumu is also a big center for industry. It processes many agricultural products like sugar and rice. It also has factories for making textiles and brewing.

Long ago, many different groups lived near the lake. They all met at the tip of the lake to trade. The Luo people called the area "Kisumo." To them, it meant a place to look for food. The Nandi people called it "Kesumett." This meant a place where food could be found during hard times. The name Kisumu is likely an English version of these old words.

In the late 1800s, British explorers chose this spot. They wanted a new port for the Uganda Railway. In 1899, they made the first plans for the city. They built wharves and landing places along the shore. The city was even called Port Florence for a short time. Later, the town moved to a ridge on the southern shore. This is where the city sits today. In 1901, the railway finally reached the pier.

Today, about 438,588 people live in the city.
