Kisumu is a major urban center located in Kenya.

It sits on the shores of Lake Victoria at the northeastern edge of the Winam Gulf. The Winam Gulf is a long, shallow arm of the lake. Kisumu is the fifth-largest city in Kenya. It is also the third-largest city in the Lake Victoria Basin. This ranking puts it behind Kampala and Mwanza. The city serves as the capital of Kisumu County. It was previously the capital of the Nyanza Province.

The city's location makes it a vital hub for trade and transport. It provides a link between Lake Victoria and Mombasa. This connection works through both water and rail systems. The city is the main terminus for agricultural goods from the Nyanza and Western regions. Kisumu International Airport supports this by offering regular flights.

Flights connect the city to Nairobi and Mombasa. The port also facilitates shipments to many neighboring countries. These include Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Kisumu's name has several possible origins tied to its history as a trading post. Before Europeans arrived, many different communities met at the tip of Lake Victoria. They used the area for barter trade. The Luo people called it "Kisumo," meaning a place to look for food. The Nandi people called it "Kesumett," meaning a place to find food during scarcity. The Abaluhya called it "Abhasuma," which means a place to borrow food. The Abagusii called it "egesumu," referring to a structure for rearing chicken. The modern name Kisumu is an English corruption of these terms.

European explorers identified the area as a strategic site in early 1898. They wanted an alternative port for the Uganda Railway. This railway was meant to replace Port Victoria. In 1899, the first skeleton plan for the city was created. This plan included wharves and landing places near the current Airport Road. By 1901, the railway reached the pier. At that time, the city was briefly renamed Port Florence.

Eventually, the name reverted to Kisumu.

The city's physical location changed during its early development. The original site north of the Nyanza Gulf had poor soil. It also had a flat topography that limited expansion. Planners moved the town to a ridge on the southern shore. This is the location where the city sits today. In 1902, a new plan provided the layout for this southern ridge. This led to the construction of government buildings like the former Provincial Commissioner's Office.

Kisumu has a tropical rainforest climate. This means there is no true dry season. It receives significant rainfall throughout the entire year. January is typically the driest month. April usually sees the most rainfall. The average temperature in the city is 22.9 °C. This moderate temperature is due to the city's elevation. The land around the city is also very fertile. There are approximately 1.6 million hectares of agricultural land in the region. Much of this land is used for sugar and rice irrigation.

The city is a center for many different industries. These include textile manufacturing, brewing, and processing agricultural products. Culturally, Kisumu is the center for the Luo people. About 90% of residents belong to this ethnic group. Most people are trilingual. They speak English, Kiswahili, and Dholuo. The city is also known as an intellectual center with many PhD holders.
