It sits about 150 km north-northeast of Nairobi. The mountain is also just 16.5 km south of the equator. It is the second highest mountain on the whole continent. The mountain is part of a large area with many counties. These include Meru, Embu, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, and Tharaka Nithi.

This mountain was once a very active volcano.

It formed about 3 million years after the East African Rift opened. Long ago, the volcano was likely much taller than it is now. It used to have a huge ice cap covering the top. This ice carved out the mountain over many thousands of years. Now, the ice has left behind deep valleys and eroded slopes.

Many people have explored this amazing place over the years. Joseph Thomson first described the mountain in 1883. He saw it from the Laikipia Plateau. Later, in 1893, an expedition reached the Lewis Glacier. This helped prove the volcano was extinct. In 1949, the government created the Mount Kenya National Park.

Later, in 1997, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There are many different parts to the mountain's landscape. The highest peaks are Batian, Nelion, and Point Lenana.

Batian is the tallest at 5,199 meters. There are also 11 small glaciers left on the peaks. The Lewis Glacier is the largest of these.

These glaciers are shrinking very fast right now. They might disappear completely by the year 2050.

Local people have deep connections to the mountain. The Kikuyu, Embu, Ameru, and Maasai all live nearby.

The Kikuyu believe the mountain is the throne of God. They call it Kirinyaga, which means "the one with the ostrich." This name comes from the white snow looking like an ostrich tail. Many plants also live here that you cannot find anywhere else.
