Kofi Awoonor was a famous writer and a leader from Ghana. He was a poet, an author, and a diplomat. A diplomat is a person who represents their country to other nations. He loved the stories and songs of his people. His work helped people understand the history of Africa. He wanted to keep the traditions of the Ewe people alive. He used these old traditions in his modern writing.

To write his poems, Awoonor looked back at his own culture. He used the oral traditions of the Ewe people. This means he used stories and songs that people say out loud. He even used words from the local Ewe language. He also included religious symbols in his work. He mixed these old ways with new styles of writing. This helped him describe what Africa was like during a time of big changes.

Kofi was born in 1935 in a place called Wheta. This is in the Volta region of the Gold Coast. Back then, the Gold Coast was known as Ghana. He was the oldest of ten children in his family. His grandmother was a singer of dirges. A dirge is a special song sung to remember someone who has died. This family history helped him become a great poet.

Kofi went to many different schools to learn. He studied at Achimota School and the University of Ghana. He graduated from university in 1960. Later, he earned a Master's Degree from University College London in 1970. He also earned a Ph.D. from Stony Brook University in New York in 1972. He worked as an ambassador to Brazil and Cuba. He also served as Ghana's representative to the United Nations.

His life was full of many different roles. He worked as a researcher and a teacher of literature. He even played a lead role in a play at the Ghana Playhouse. In 1978, he wrote a book called The House by the Sea about his time in jail. In 2013, he went to Kenya for the Storymoja Hay Festival. This was a four-day event for storytelling and thinking. Sadly, he was killed during an attack at a mall there. He was buried in his hometown of Wheta.
