His journey to the top began in a family of farmers. As a young boy, he played soccer and basketball. Everything changed when he was 13 years old. A local coach saw his talent and encouraged him to run. Growing up near a sports stadium helped him love the sport. He watched many competitions and felt a passion for racing. His first big international win came at age 18 in Seoul.

Running at a high level can be very hard. In the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, El Guerrouj had a difficult moment. He fell during the 1500 metres race and finished last. However, he did not let this stop him. He worked hard and became a champion. He won four world titles in a row from 1997 to 2003. He also won the Golden League prize three times. This prize was given to athletes who won many races in a row.

His records are truly amazing to look at. In 1998 in Rome, he ran the 1500 metres in 3:26.00. This was a world record that still stands today. He was the first person to run each lap in under 55 seconds. In 1999, he also broke the world record for the mile. He ran it in 3:43.13 in Rome. That same year, he set a record for the 2000 metres in Berlin. He was a very consistent and fast runner.

El Guerrouj reached the highest peak at the 2004 Athens Olympics. He won gold medals in both the 1500 metres and the 5000 metres. This was a huge feat that no man had done in 80 years. He was the first to do this since Paavo Nurmi in 1924. After his big wins, he retired from professional racing in 2006. Today, he uses his fame to help people. He works as an Ambassador for Peace and Sport. He also serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
