He often carried a stopwatch to check his speed during a race. This helped him use an "even pace" strategy. Instead of running too fast at the start, he spread his effort out. He wanted to keep a steady, predictable rhythm. This analytic approach helped him beat many other fast athletes. He even set two world records in just one hour during the 1924 Olympics. This smart way of racing made him a legend in sports.

His journey started with a very difficult childhood in Finland.

His family lived in a small apartment in central Turku. When he was twelve, he had to leave school to work. He worked as an errand boy for a bakery to help his family. Even while working, he stayed very active by pushing heavy carts. These steep climbs helped make his back and leg muscles strong. Later, he found inspiration in the Olympic runner Hannes Kolehmainen. This inspired him to start a very strict training program.

Nurmi used many unusual ways to make himself a better athlete.

During his military service, he practiced in very creative ways. He once ran behind moving trains to help stretch his stride. He also wore heavy, iron-clad army boots to strengthen his legs. In the summer, he focused on cross country running. During the winter, he practiced by cross country skiing. These different activities built the strength he needed to win. His dedication helped him reach the highest levels of international sport.

Even after his racing days ended, Nurmi remained an important figure.
