His most famous race happened in Rome during the 1960 Summer Olympics.

Abebe tried to wear new running shoes for the race. The shoes did not fit well and caused painful blisters. He decided to run the whole marathon barefoot instead. The race was very hot and took place in the evening. He ran past the Arch of Constantine to finish his race. Abebe won the gold medal and set a new world record. He even felt like he could have run much further.

Before he was a famous athlete, Abebe was a soldier.

He moved to Addis Ababa around 1952 to join the Imperial Guard. This was an elite group that protected the Emperor of Ethiopia. He rose to the rank of shambel, which means captain. He even served in the Kagnew Battalion during the Korean War. This military background helped him stay strong and disciplined. His training included running 20 kilometers every day from the hills.

In 1964, Abebe traveled to Tokyo for his next big challenge.

This time, he wore Puma shoes instead of running barefoot. He had to have surgery for appendicitis just before the games. Even after the surgery, he was ready to compete at a high level. He took the lead during the race and stayed ahead. He finished the marathon in a very fast time. This win made him the first person to defend an Olympic marathon title.

These games were an early version of the Paralympic Games. He even won a cross-country sleigh-riding event in Norway. Today, many schools and the Abebe Bikila Stadium honor his memory.
