Some people call it ping-pong. You can play by yourself or in a team of two. Players use small rackets to hit a light, hollow ball. The ball must go over a net in the middle of the table. If you miss the ball, your opponent gets a point. This game is special because players use spin to move the ball. Spin makes the ball change its path in tricky ways.

Most modern balls are made of a plastic material. They are usually white or orange so you can see them well. Players use a wooden racket called a blade.

This blade is covered with rubber on one or both sides. One side must be black, but the other can be red, blue, green, pink, or violet.

This sport has a very interesting history. It began in Victorian England as a game played after dinner.

Some people think British officers in India played a simple version in the 1860s. They used books as a net and even used books as rackets! In 1901, a company named J. Jaques & Son Ltd trademarked the name "ping-pong." Later, a man named James W. Gibb found better balls made of celluloid. In 1901, E.C. Goode invented the modern racket by adding rubber to wood. These changes helped the game grow very quickly.

Many groups help run the sport today. The International Table Tennis Federation, or ITTF, was founded in 1926.

It now has 226 member associations all over the world. The ITTF makes the official rules for how to play. Table tennis became an Olympic sport in 1988.

In the Olympics, there are events for men and women. There are also team events for men and women. Since 2008, the Olympics has used team events instead of doubles.

Rules help make the game exciting to watch. In the year 2000, the ITTF changed the ball size. They moved from a 38 mm ball to a larger 40 mm ball.

This change helped slow the game down for television. They also changed the scoring system in 2001. Instead of playing to 21 points, players now play to 11 points. This makes the matches feel very fast-paced. When you serve, you must toss the ball at least 16 centimeters into the air. This ensures the other player can see the serve coming.
