Playing table tennis at a high level is a very hard job. It requires quick reactions and great hand-eye coordination. Waldner traveled to China for a training camp when he was young. There, he saw how much the Chinese players worked together. He learned a lot from their dedication and solidarity. This helped him see how important it was to succeed. He used these lessons to build a very long career.

Waldner's journey started early in his life. He was born in Stockholm on October 3, 1965. At just 16 years old, he reached a major final. This happened at the 1982 European Championships. He played for clubs like TTC Rhön-Sprudel Fulda-Maberzell in Germany. He even won his ninth Swedish championship in 2010. He officially retired from playing in 2016.
