Deng Yaping is one of the greatest table tennis players ever. She was born in Zhengzhou, Henan, on February 5, 1973. Table tennis is a fast game played on a small table.

Deng was a very successful player for China. She won eighteen world championships during her career. She also won four Olympic gold medals. People call her the Chinese female athlete of the century. She even joined the Hall of Fame for table tennis in 2003.

Becoming a champion took a lot of hard work. Deng started playing the game when she was only five years old. By age nine, she won a junior championship. She won her first national title at age thirteen.

However, her height was a hard job at first. She stood only 1.5 metres tall. Because she was short, people did not pick her for the national team at first. She finally joined the national team in 1988.

Her career was full of big wins and famous moments. In 1989, she won her first world title in women's doubles with Qiao Hong. Two years later, in 1991, she won her first singles world championship.

At the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, she won two gold medals. She did the same thing at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, USA. From 1990 to 1997, she was the number one female player in the world. This means she held the top spot for eight years.

After she stopped playing, Deng stayed busy with many important roles. She studied very hard at several famous schools. She earned degrees from Tsinghua University and the University of Nottingham.

She even earned a PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2008. Her research was about the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She worked on the committee to help plan those games.

She also served on the International Olympic Committee's commissions.

Deng's life shows how sports and learning can go together. She was once the CEO of a search engine called Jike Search. She also worked as a commentator for the Women's World Cup in 2020.

Even though she is a sports star, she is also a scholar. She married a table tennis player named Lin Zhigang in 2007. They have a baby boy together.

Her story is about being great at a sport and at school.
