Playing tennis required great skill and focus. Perry trained with the Arsenal football club to keep fit. He was known for his excellent defense. He could place his balls very well during a match. In 1933, he helped Great Britain win the Davis Cup against France. His team then won more titles in 1934, 1935, and 1936. In 1935, he achieved something very special. He became the first man to win a "Career Grand Slam." This means he won all four major singles titles. He finished this huge task at the French Championships.

Fred Perry's life began in Stockport, England.

He was born on May 18, 1909. His father, Samuel Perry, worked as a cotton spinner. The family lived in several places like Bolton and Wallasey. Later, they moved to Ealing in West London. Perry started playing tennis on public courts near his home. He went to Ealing Grammar School for Boys. His father later became a Member of Parliament for Kettering in 1929. This background shaped the man Perry would become.

Life was not always easy for the young athlete. Perry came from a working-class background. Most tennis players at the time were from rich families. Some leaders in the tennis world did not treat him with respect. They even called him an "upstart." Because of this, Perry decided to turn professional in 1936. He moved to the United States to play. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1939. During the Second World War, he served in the US Army Air Force. He later returned to his roots in London.

He talked about tennis on the radio from 1959 to 1994. People still celebrate his great talent today. A statue of him stands at Wimbledon. In 1984, a survey called him the best British sportsman of the 20th century.
