He was a very hard worker who used skill instead of just natural talent. People called him the "Tennis Machine" because he played in a very careful way. He was a baseline player, which means he stayed near the back of the court. He used great control and accuracy to pressure his opponents. He also studied his rivals by taking detailed notes on their strengths. This smart way of playing helped him win seven Grand Slam singles titles. He was part of a famous group called the Four Musketeers.

This team of four French players ruled tennis in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

Lacoste earned a special nickname that changed how the world saw him. Many people call him "the Crocodile." One story says he once made a bet about a suitcase made of alligator skin. Because of this, the American press called him "the Alligator." Later, his friend Robert George embroidered a crocodile onto his blazer. This small animal became a very famous symbol for his brand. In 1933, he started a company called La Société Chemise Lacoste. He helped create the tennis shirt, which many people call a polo shirt. These shirts often have the small crocodile logo on the chest.

His tennis career began when he was only 15 years old.

He started playing after a trip to England with his father. He played in his first Grand Slam at the 1922 Wimbledon Championships. His big breakthrough happened in 1925 when he won at the French Championships and Wimbledon. In 1927, he was part of the French team that won the Davis Cup. This was a big victory against the United States in Philadelphia. That year was even called "the finest year in tennis history" by some experts. He was ranked as the world's number one player several times.

Lacoste reached many important milestones during his life. He won a bronze medal at the 1924 Summer Olympics. Between 1923 and 1928, he played 51 Davis Cup matches for his country. He won 32 of those singles matches and 8 doubles matches. He even wrote a book about his sport called "Lacoste on Tennis" in 1928. In 1961, he helped change how people played the game. Most rackets at that time were made of wood. Lacoste created a new racket made of tubular steel. This steel racket was stiffer and helped hit the ball with more force.

His work in sports and fashion still links to our lives today. You might see people wearing polo shirts with a small crocodile on them. This is because his son, Bernard, took over the company in 1963. The steel racket he invented was also very popular. It was sold in the United States by Wilson Sporting Goods. Famous players like Billie Jean King and Jimmy Connors used it. Even though he stopped playing due to health issues, his name stayed strong. In 1976, he and the other Musketeers joined the International Tennis Hall of Fame. His life shows how hard work and new ideas can leave a lasting mark.
