He was known as a very hard worker. He was a smart player who studied his opponents. He took notes on how they played. This helped him win seven Grand Slam singles titles. He was also part of a group called the Four Musketeers. This was a team of four French players. They were very strong in tennis during the 1920s.

People gave him the nickname "the Crocodile." One story says he made a bet about a suitcase. The suitcase was made of alligator skin. Later, a friend put a crocodile on his jacket.

He used this logo for his own brand. In 1933, he started a company to make tennis shirts. These are called polo shirts. They have a small crocodile on the chest.

Lacoste also helped change tennis gear. In 1961, he made a new tennis racket. Most rackets back then were made of wood. His new racket was made of steel tubes. This made the racket stiffer. It helped players hit the ball with more force.
