Most people focus on the 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube. These competitors are called speedcubers or cubers. They want to get the lowest clock times. They also try to use the fewest moves. To do this, they use finger tricks. They also use algorithms. An algorithm is a set sequence of moves. Cubers must also use pattern recognition to solve the puzzles.

There are many ways to solve a cube. The CFOP method is the most popular choice today. It stands for Cross, F2L, OLL, and PLL. This method uses a layer-by-layer system. First, you make a cross on one side. Next, you solve the first two layers. This part is called F2L. Then, you use OLL to orient the last layer. This uses 57 different algorithms. Finally, you use PLL to finish the cube. This uses 21 different algorithms. Other popular methods include Roux and ZZ.

The history of the cube began in Hungary. Professor Ernő Rubik invented it on May 19, 1974. In 1979, he worked with the Ideal Toy Company. This helped the cube become famous around the world. The first world championship was held in 1982. It took place in Budapest, Hungary. Nineteen people competed in that first event. An American named Minh Thai won it. He had a time of 22.95 seconds. This was the fastest time ever recorded then.

Today, the World Cube Association (WCA) runs most contests. The WCA is a non-profit group. It recognizes 17 different events. You can solve 2x2x2 or 7x7x7 cubes. Some puzzles are shaped like pyramids. These include the Pyraminx and the Megaminx.

The WCA has many different roles. The WCA Board leads the whole group. The WCA Council is an advisory team. It is made of community members. Organizers manage the contests. Delegates help the competitors during the events. This keeps the competitions fair for everyone.

Speedcubing has grown into a huge business. Many companies now make special speedcubes. Brands like MoYu, GANCUBE, and QiYi make them. These cubes turn very smoothly. This helps cubers solve puzzles even faster. Many people learn new tricks online. This has helped a new generation of cubers grow. In February 2026, Teodor Zajder set a huge record. He solved a 3x3x3 cube in just 2.76 seconds.
