The standard cube has six faces. Each face has nine colored stickers or plastic panels. The colors are white, red, blue, orange, green, and yellow. Since 1988, the colors follow a set pattern. White is always opposite yellow. Blue is opposite green, and orange is opposite red.

Inside, a pivot mechanism lets each layer turn on its own. This allows the colors to mix up as you twist it.

An inventor named Ernő Rubik created the puzzle in 1974. He was a sculptor and an architecture professor in Budapest, Hungary. He originally called it the Magic Cube. He did not mean to make a toy at first. He wanted to help his students understand 3D objects. He also wanted to solve a structural problem. He needed to move parts without the whole thing falling apart. It took him about one month to solve his own invention!

Many people are called speedcubers. They practice to solve the puzzle as fast as they can. The World Cube Association has organized global competitions since 2003.
