Rummikub is a tile-based game for two to four players.

It combines ideas from the card game rummy and the game mahjong. The game uses 106 tiles in a single set. Most of these are numbered tiles from 1 to 13. They come in four colors: blue, red, orange, and black. There are also two joker tiles included.

Players use a rack to hold their tiles. This keeps their numbers a secret from other players. People enjoy the sound of snapping tiles onto the table. It makes a strong play feel very satisfying.

To play, you must create sets of at least three tiles. There are two types of sets called runs and groups. A run uses same-colored tiles in a number order. For example, a red 3, 4, and 5 make a run. A group uses the same number in different colors. A red 3, blue 3, and black 3 make a group.

On your first turn, you must make an initial meld. This first set must have a total value of 30 points. If you cannot play, you must draw a tile from the pool.

The game continues in a clockwise direction.

A special part of the game is moving tiles. You can change the sets that are already on the table. You might split a long run into two smaller runs. You can also swap a tile in a group for a new color.

You can even use a joker to stand in for a missing number. If you find the right tile, you can replace the joker. This allows you to use the joker in a new set. This constant moving makes the game very strategic and fun.

Ephraim Hertzano invented this game in Israel. He was born in Romania and moved to Israel after World War II. He made the first sets by hand in his backyard. He sold these sets door-to-door and in small shops.

Later, his family licensed the game to other countries. In the 1970s, Irv and Arline Kossoff brought it to the United States. Arline translated the rules from Hebrew to English. By 1977, it became a very popular game in America.

Rummikub is similar to many European card games. Some games like Machiavelli use two decks of cards. In Turkey, a similar game is called Okey. It is often played by families at cafes or gatherings.

The game has won many big awards over the years. It won the Spiel des Jahres in Germany in 1980. It also won the Polish Game of the Year in 1993. The first person to use all their tiles wins. They shout "Rummikub" to let everyone know they won!
