Rummy is a large family of card games.

The main goal is to build special groups called melds. You can make a set by finding three or four cards of the same rank. For example, you might collect three Kings. You can also make a run. A run is a sequence of cards from the same suit. A run might look like the 4, 5, and 6 of Hearts. These games are exciting because players try to be the first to go out. Going out means you have used all your cards in melds.

Some games even use a joker as a wild card. A joker can stand in for any card you need to finish a group.

Playing a game of Rummy follows a steady rhythm. First, the dealer gives cards to each player. In 10 Cards Rummy, everyone gets ten cards. In Indian Rummy, players receive thirteen cards. The rest of the cards go into a face-down pile called the stock. One card is turned face up to start the discard pile. On your turn, you usually pick up a card from the stock. Then, you must discard one card to the pile. Some players might even pick up the whole discard pile. After you play, you must always end your turn by discarding a card.

No one knows exactly where Rummy began. There are two main ideas about its history. One theory says it started in Mexico around the 1890s. It might have come from a game called Conquian. This game used a 40-card Spanish deck. Another theory says Rummy came from Asia. It might be related to a Mahjong game called Kun P'ai. Some people think the name comes from the British word "rum." In that case, it would mean something odd or strange. Others think it is named after a type of liquor.

There are many different ways to play. Some versions are called Gin or Canasta. These became very popular during the twentieth century. In 500 Rummy, each player starts with seven cards. In Basic Rummy, players use a standard pack of 52 cards. If you have more players, you might need a twin pack. A twin pack has 104 cards and two different patterns on the backs. Some players even use German-suited cards. Different games have different ways to count points. For example, court cards like Jacks or Queens are often worth 10 points each.

If you know how to play other card games, Rummy will feel familiar. It uses the same types of decks you see in many games. It also uses the same idea of matching cards. You might have played games where you try to collect sets. Rummy takes that idea and adds the challenge of drawing and discarding. It is a game of skill and strategy. You have to decide which cards to keep and which to let go. This makes it a great way to spend time with friends and family.
