Five-card draw

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Five-card draw is a popular way to play poker. Many people call it the simplest version of the game. Because it is so easy to learn, it is often the first poker game new players try. You might see it played at home with friends. It is also the basis for video poker machines. While it is common in home games, it is rarely seen in big casinos or tournaments. Some online sites offer it, but it is not as popular as Texas hold 'em.

To play, the dealer gives each person five cards. These cards are dealt one at a time and stay face down. This keeps your hand a secret from others. First, there is a round of betting. If players want to keep playing, the "draw" phase begins. This is the most important part of the game. You choose which cards to replace and discard them. The dealer then gives you the same number of new cards from the deck. Now you have five cards in your hand once again.

After the draw, there is a second round of betting. This round starts with the player to the dealer's left. If there is more than one player left, they move to a showdown. During the showdown, players show their cards to see who has the best hand. The winner takes the pot, which is the total money bet. Some people use special house rules to make the game run smoothly. For example, a rule might say you cannot replace more than three cards. This helps keep the deck from running out of cards too fast.

Casinos and home players sometimes use different rules for the deck. One rule says a player cannot draw five cards in a row. If they want to replace all five, the dealer gives them four first. Then the dealer waits for others to draw before giving the last card. Another rule says the bottom card of the deck is never used. This stops players from using information they might have seen. If the deck runs out of cards during the draw, the dealer can use the discarded cards. The dealer shuffles those old cards to give to the last players.

Some people play a special version called a stripped deck. This is also known as "ace-to-seven" or "seven-to-ace." In this version, you use a smaller deck with fewer cards. If there are four players, they use a 32-card deck. This deck only has cards from seven up to the ace. If five people play, they add the sixes to make a 36-card deck. Using fewer cards changes the math of the game. For example, a flush becomes harder to get than a full house.

Math can tell us how likely it is to get a great hand. In five-card draw, getting a royal flush is very rare. It happens less than 0.001% of the time. Getting a straight flush is also very hard at less than 0.002%. A full house happens about 0.14% of the time. Most of the time, players will only have one pair or no pair at all. Having no pair happens about 50.10% of the time. Knowing these numbers can help players understand the game better.
