Texas hold 'em is a very popular way to play poker.

It is a game where people compete for a pot. The pot is the money or chips that players put in. Players do not just rely on luck. They use math and psychology to make smart choices. They try to predict what other players might do. This makes it a thinking man's game.

Each hand follows a specific set of steps. First, every player gets two cards called hole cards. These cards are dealt face down so they stay secret. Next, five community cards are placed face up in the middle. These cards come out in three stages. The first stage is the flop, which has three cards. Then comes the turn, which is a fourth card. The final card is called the river.

Not much is known about who first invented this game. However, the Texas Legislature says it began in Robstown, Texas. It likely started in the early 20th century. The game moved to Las Vegas in 1963. A man named Corky McCorquodale brought it to the California Club. Later, a group of Texan players changed how aces work. They changed it so that aces are high instead of low.
