Poker is a large family of card games played all over the world.

In these games, people use cards to compete for a central prize called a pot. Players place bets based on how good they think their cards are. They might try to win by having the best hand or by using a strategy called bluffing. Bluffing is when a player acts like they have great cards to trick others. This makes poker different from many other games. It is a mix of luck, math, and understanding how other people think.

Playing a hand follows a specific set of steps. First, players make forced bets called antes or blinds to start the pot. The dealer shuffles the cards and deals them out one at a time. In some games, cards are dealt face-down, while in others, some are face-up. After the cards are dealt, players enter betting rounds. You can choose to call a bet to match it, or raise it to make it larger. If you do not want to play, you can fold and lose what you already bet. If everyone else folds, you win the pot without showing your cards. If people stay in until the end, they have a showdown to reveal the winner.

People have been playing versions of poker for a very long time. Some scholars think it came from French or Iranian games. One early version used only twenty cards. In the 1830s, the game became popular in the American South on riverboats. An English actor named Joe Cowell wrote about poker on a steamboat in 1829. Later, the US military helped spread a version called seven-card stud. After World War II, poker became a common sight in many casinos. The World Series of Poker helped it grow even more in the 1970s.

There are many different ways to play poker today. Most games use a standard deck of 52 cards. Some places use smaller packs with 32, 40, or 48 cards. There are four main families of poker games. Straight poker involves being dealt a complete hand all at once. Stud poker uses a mix of face-up and face-down cards. Draw poker allows players to trade in their cards for new ones. Community card games, like Texas hold 'em, use cards placed in the center for everyone to use.

Poker has changed from a small hobby into a huge global activity. In the early 2000s, the game saw a massive boom in popularity. This happened because people started watching poker on television. Now, many people play online or join huge tournaments with multimillion-dollar prizes. Some people even play video poker on machines. While some games are just for fun, others are played by professionals. It is a game that connects people through skill and excitement. Even computers now try to learn how to play against humans.
