Poker is a diverse family of card games played by people all over the world.

In these games, players compete to win a central prize called a pot. They do this by wagering money or chips based on the strength of their cards. While luck plays a role in which cards you receive, the long-run success of a player depends on probability, psychology, and game theory. This means players use math and an understanding of human behavior to make decisions. A unique feature of poker is bluffing, where a player bets heavily to trick opponents into thinking they have a strong hand. This strategic element distinguishes poker from many other card games.

A standard game follows a specific sequence of actions. First, players make forced bets known as antes or blinds to build the initial pot. The dealer shuffles the deck and deals cards to players one at a time, moving clockwise. Depending on the specific variant, cards may be dealt face-up or face-down. After the deal, players enter betting rounds. A player can "call" to match a previous bet, "raise" to increase it, or "fold" to exit the hand and lose their previous bets. If all players except one fold, that person wins the pot immediately without showing their cards. If multiple players remain after the final round, they participate in a "showdown" to reveal their hands and determine the winner.

There are four main families of poker variants, categorized by how cards are dealt and how betting works. The first is straight poker, where a complete hand is dealt at once. This is the oldest family and includes games like three-card brag. The second family is stud poker, which uses a combination of face-up and face-down cards dealt in rounds called "streets." Seven-card stud is a popular version where players use the best five cards from a seven-card total. The third family is draw poker, where players can discard cards to receive new ones from the deck. Finally, community card poker, such as Texas hold 'em, uses cards dealt to the center of the table that all players can use to build their hands.

The history of poker is a subject of much debate among scholars. Some believe it was inspired by the French game Poque or the Iranian game As-Nas. In the 1830s, poker became widely known in the American South through gambling riverboats on the Mississippi River. An English actor named Joe Cowell recorded a description of a twenty-card version of poker played on a steamboat in 1829. Later, the US military helped spread seven-card stud during the middle of the 19th century. Following World War II, poker became a staple in casinos, and the World Series of Poker helped increase its fame in the 1970s.

Betting structures also vary significantly between different games. In fixed-limit poker, players must bet and raise by standardized, set amounts. Pot-limit poker allows players to bet any amount up to the current size of the pot. In no-limit poker, a player can wager their entire stack of chips at any time. If a player cannot match a bet fully, they may go "all-in," allowing them to stay in the hand for the portion of the bet they can cover. These different structures change the level of risk and the mathematical strategy required to win.

The popularity of poker saw a massive surge during a "poker boom" between 2003 and 2006. This growth was driven largely by the televising of games, which turned poker into a spectator sport. Today, the game has evolved from a small recreational activity into a global phenomenon. It is played in massive tournaments with multimillion-dollar prizes and is widely available through online platforms. Some people also play video poker, which functions similarly to a slot machine by allowing players to discard and replace cards for a payout.

Modern poker also intersects with the field of computer science. Creating artificial intelligence that can compete with professional players has been a significant challenge. This is because poker is a game of imperfect information, unlike chess. In chess, both players have perfect knowledge of the entire board. In poker, players must make decisions based on hidden cards and the unpredictable behavior of opponents. This complexity makes poker a fascinating subject for studying how machines can learn to handle uncertainty and human psychology.
