Five-card stud is a classic card game. It is an early form of stud poker. People enjoy it because it is easy to read. Most of the cards are face up for everyone to see. This makes the game feel very clear and open. You can see how strong an opponent's hand might be. This transparency takes away some of the mystery found in other games.

Playing the game follows a steady rhythm. First, every player gets one card face down. This is called a hole card. Next, everyone gets one card face up. After a round of betting, more face-up cards are dealt. This continues until players have four cards showing. The final card is dealt face up to finish the hand. Sometimes, players end the game early by betting.

This game has a long history. It started during the American Civil War in the 1860s. It was once very popular in big contests. For example, it was in the World Series of Poker from 1971 to 1974. A player named Bill Boyd won all four of those events. He won a total of $80,000 from those wins. He earned four special bracelets for his skill.

Many different versions of the game exist today. In Finland, people play Canadian stud or Scandinavian stud. In this version, a four-card straight or flush counts as a hand. There is also a game called Telesina from Sanremo. It uses a stripped deck with cards ranked 2 to 6 removed. In Telesina, a flush is even stronger than a full house. Some players also enjoy Mexican stud, which is a "roll your own" game.

Even though it is less common now, the game stays alive. It has moved from big tournaments to smaller settings. You might find it in small home games or casinos. Many people now play it in online cardrooms. Some versions even use special rules for low-ranking hands. This is called High-Low play. Whether playing in person or online, it remains a special way to play cards.
