Pieces called tetrominoes fall from the top of a rectangular field. Each piece is made of four connected blocks. Players move these pieces side to side or rotate them. The goal is to stack them to make full horizontal lines. When a line is complete, it disappears and gives you points. If the pieces pile up to the very top, the game ends. This is often called "topping out."

Alexey Pajitnov created the game in the mid-1980s. He was a software engineer in the Soviet Union.

He worked on it at the Dorodnitsyn Computing Center. Pajitnov was inspired by a pentomino tiling puzzle. He decided to use four blocks instead of five. He named the game by combining "tetra," meaning four, with his favorite sport, tennis. He first programmed it on a computer called the Elektronika 60.

Bringing Tetris to the whole world was a big journey.

A man named Robert Stein saw the game in Hungary. He helped bring it to companies in the UK and the US. In 1989, the game was released for the Nintendo Game Boy. This version was a huge hit and sold 35 million copies. It helped make the Game Boy very successful. Later, the Tetris Company was formed to manage the game's rights.

Tetris is more than just a game on a screen. It has influenced many different things in our world. You can find its shapes in art and even in architecture. Some scientists even study it to see how it helps the mind. There is even a competitive culture for the game.
