An engineer named Alexey Pajitnov made it in the mid-1980s. He worked on it in his spare time in the Soviet Union. He was inspired by a tile puzzle. The name comes from "tetra," which means four. It also comes from his favorite sport, tennis.

In the game, blocks fall from the top. These blocks are called tetrominoes. Each one has four connected parts.

Players move and turn the pieces to make lines. When a line is full, it disappears. This gives the player points. It also stops the pile from reaching the top. If the pile gets too high, the game ends.

Many people have played Tetris. It has over 520 million sales. Most people play it on mobile phones.
