The Kalevala is a famous collection of epic poetry.

It is the national epic for the people of Finland and Karelia. This book tells many wonderful stories from old myths. One story explains how the Earth was first created. Other stories describe fights between the land of Väinölä and the land of Pohjola.

The poems also tell of a magical machine called the Sampo. This machine was known for making great wealth. These stories help people understand ancient traditions and beliefs.

Elias Lönnrot was the man who put this collection together.

He was a doctor, a botanist, and a poet. Lönnrot wanted to find old folk songs from the people. He traveled many times to find these songs. He made eleven different field trips over fifteen years. During these trips, he listened to people sing their traditional poems. He even met a great singer named Arhippa Perttunen. This singer shared 4,000 verses of poetry with him.

Lönnrot's work was a very big job. He started his first trip in 1828. He later became a health officer in the Kainuu region. He lived in a place called the Hövelö croft. He spent his spare time searching for more poems. The first version of the book was the Old Kalevala. It was published in 1835 with 12,078 verses.

Later, a much larger version came out in 1849. This famous version has 22,795 verses in fifty stories. An even shorter version was published in 1862.

These poems have a very long history. Some themes about the Earth might be 3,000 years old. For a long time, people sang these songs out loud. This was called the oral tradition. In the 18th century, these songs began to disappear in Finland. New types of rhymed poetry became more common. The church also discouraged singing old pagan stories.

Still, many people kept the songs alive. Collectors worked hard to write them all down. They saved thousands of items of poetry for the future.

The Kalevala changed how people felt about their home. It helped people build a strong Finnish identity. This feeling eventually helped Finland become independent in 1917.

The book is also famous all over the world. It even influenced the stories written by J.R.R. Tolkien. He used these ideas for his famous Middle-earth books.
