He did not just change the church. He also changed how people wrote and read their own language. Before him, there was no standard way to spell Finnish words. His work helped create the rules for modern Finnish spelling. This was a huge gift to the people of Finland.

Agricola worked in many different ways to help people. First, he created an ABC book to help children learn to read. This book was called Abckiria and it was first printed in 1543.

Next, he wrote a large prayer book called Rucouskiria. This book had about 700 different prayers inside it. His most famous job was translating the New Testament into Finnish. He finished this massive task in only three years. He also translated smaller books for church services. These books helped people during weddings and funerals.

Agricola's life began around the year 1510. He was born in a village called Torsby in Pernå. At that time, Finland was part of the country of Sweden. His family was quite wealthy and lived in the Nyland area. He was a very talented student of many languages.

He went to a Latin school in Viborg to study. Later, he traveled all the way to Wittenberg in Germany. There, he studied under famous thinkers like Martin Luther. This travel helped him learn about new ideas for the church.

Many important dates and places marked his career. In 1528, he moved to Turku to work as a scribe. He became the rector of the Turku Cathedral School in 1539. In 1544, he printed his famous prayer book. He was made a bishop of Turku in 1554.

This made him the first Lutheran bishop for much of Finland. In 1557, he went on a trip to Russia. He was helping to negotiate the Treaty of Novgorod. Sadly, he fell ill and died on April 9, 1557. He died while traveling near the Karelian Isthmus.

We can still see Agricola's influence in the world today. Many churches in places like Helsinki and Toronto are named after him. Even an asteroid in space is named 3212 Agricola.

In Finland, his death date is celebrated as the day of the Finnish language. A special ten-euro coin was even made to honor him. The coin shows a quill to represent his writing. People remember him as a man who brought words to his people. His work helped a whole nation find its voice.
