Runeberg often wrote about the lives of people in the Finnish countryside. One of his most famous poems is about a farmer named Paavo. He even shared his food with a neighbor who had lost everything.

Runeberg was born on February 5, 1804, in a town called Jakobstad. His father, Lorentz Ulrik Runeberg, was a sea captain. His mother was named Anna Maria Malm. As a young child, Runeberg was often sick with a condition called scrofula. This illness made his body grow slowly. Because of this, he did not learn to walk until he was three or four years old.

He spent many years studying very hard to become a teacher and a professor. He studied at the Imperial Academy of Turku and earned a Master of Philosophy in 1827. He later worked as a professor of Latin literature in Porvoo. Runeberg wrote many different kinds of poems, including an epic called "The Tales of Ensign Stål." This long poem was written between 1848 and 1860. It tells stories about the Finnish War of 1808–09.
