He is often called the first modern Faroese poet. He and his brother, Hans Andreas Djurhuus, were known as the Áarstova brothers. This name came from the house where they grew up. His writing helped change how people used their own language in stories. Many people believe he was a genius of great vision. His poems have a musical sound that people still love today.

Janus learned how to write poetry in a very special way. When he was in school, he heard a teacher read a famous poem. This moment was like a "poetic baptism" for him. He also studied to be a lawyer. He went to Denmark to study at a university. He studied in Copenhagen and also in Bornholm. He finished his law degree in 1911.

His work began to appear in the early 1900s. He published his first poem in 1901. In 1914, he released a book called Yrkingar. This was a very big step for his people. It was the first time a single poet published a collection of work in the Faroese language. He wrote four more collections of poems after that. He also translated many old stories from Ancient Greek and Latin. He even translated the Iliad into Faroese after he died.

Janus had a very interesting way of using words. He mixed modern Faroese with the words used in old traditional ballads. He also used rhythms from ancient Greek and German poetry. His poems often talked about Norse mythology and classical ideas. One famous story says he once went onto a Greek ship. He called the captain over to hear him recite the Odyssey in Ancient Greek. The captain was very surprised and even joined in!

Even though he loved his home, his poems sometimes felt sad. He wrote about a feeling called "exile" because he lived in Denmark for a long time. His work showed a clash between beautiful dreams and a difficult reality. People in the Faroe Islands still honor his memory. In 2004, the post office released ten special stamps.
