He is widely recognized as the first modern poet of the Faroe Islands. Along with his brother, Hans Andreas Djurhuus, he was known as one of the Áarstova brothers. This nickname came from the specific house where they were raised. His work marked a major breakthrough for the Faroese language. He helped transform how the language was used in creative writing. Many scholars consider him a writer of genius and a great poet.

Djurhuus experienced what he called a "poetic baptism" during his school years. This happened when he heard Jákup Dahl recite a famous poem. The poem was "Nú er tann stundin komin til handa," which served as an anthem for Faroese nationalism. This moment inspired his lifelong connection to his culture. While he was a poet, he also trained as a lawyer. He traveled to Denmark for his university studies. He studied in Copenhagen and Bornholm before earning his cand. jur. degree in 1911.

His literary career followed a very specific path of publication. He published his first poem, "Blíð er summarnátt á Føroya landi," in 1901. In 1914, he released a collection titled Yrkingar. This was a historic milestone for his people. It was the first time a single poet published a collection of work entirely in Faroese. He went on to publish four more collections of poems during his life. He also became a skilled translator of classical works. He translated pieces by Plato and Sappho from Ancient Greek and Latin.

The style of his poetry was complex and deeply layered. He blended modern Faroese with the traditional language of old ballads. His writing also drew from Scandinavian and German poetic traditions. He combined themes from Norse mythology with Classical mythology. The rhythm of his verse was influenced by Ancient Greek and modern German poetry. One story describes his deep knowledge of the classics. While in Tórshavn, he reportedly boarded a Greek steamer. He requested the captain join him so he could recite the Odyssey in Ancient Greek.

Djurhuus's work often explored the tension between ideals and reality. He is described as a national romantic and a late Romantic poet. However, his poems sometimes showed a sense of pessimism. This often came from a clash between his dreams of beauty and a difficult reality. His poem "Útlegd," which means Exile, reflects his years living in Denmark. This sense of doubt and melancholy is a noted part of his literary voice. He captured the struggle of loving a homeland while feeling disconnected from it.

His reputation in Scandinavia remains very high. Some critics have judged his poetry to be among the best modern Scandinavian writing. He is praised for having great vision and musicality. His influence helped establish a modern literary identity for the Faroe Islands. Even after his death in 1948, his work continued to be studied and translated. His posthumous translation of the Iliad remains a significant contribution to Faroese literature.
