He is best known for his beautiful stories about nature. His writing showed how rural people lived with the land. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1939. This was the first time a Finnish writer won this prize. The Nobel committee loved his deep understanding of farming life. They praised his exquisite art in describing how people relate to nature.

Sillanpää’s journey to writing began with a very different path. He was born into a peasant farming family in Hämeenkyrö. Even though his parents were poor, they sent him to school. He studied medicine at the University of Helsinki starting in 1908. While at university, he met many famous artists and musicians. These friends included the composer Jean Sibelius and the painter Eero Järnefelt. In 1913, he moved back to his home village to write.

His books often looked at the real world around him. In 1919, he wrote a novel called Hurskas kurjuus. This book was about the Finnish Civil War. It was quite controversial because he used an objective approach. He also wrote a very famous book in 1931. This book was titled Nuorena nukkunut, or The Maid Silja. This story brought him international fame across the world.

Life brought many big changes during his most famous years. In 1939, his wife Sigrid died from pneumonia. This happened the same year he won his Nobel Prize. Just after he won, the Winter War began in Finland. Sillanpää traveled to Stockholm to receive his gold medal. He chose to donate the medal to help the war effort. He even wrote song lyrics to lift people's spirits during this time.

Later in life, Sillanpää became a beloved figure on the radio.
