His father was a doctor, but he died when Jean was very young. This meant the family had to move to live with his grandmother. His uncle Pehr was a big help to him. Pehr gave him a violin when he was ten years old. He also helped guide him in his musical studies. Sibelius grew up loving the sun and the freedom of nature.

Some of his music was inspired by the Kalevala. The Kalevala is a famous book of old Finnish stories. He even wrote a piece called The Swan of Tuonela. These works helped make his name famous everywhere.

In 1904, he moved to a home called Ainola near Lake Tuusula.

He lived there with his wife, Aino, and their daughters. After 1926, he stopped writing major new works of music. People call this time the "silence of Järvenpää" because of where he lived. He lived a long life and died in 1957. Finland still celebrates his birthday every year on 8 December. This day is known as the Day of Finnish Music.
