He was born on June 9, 1865, as the seventh of twelve children. His father was a house painter and a musician who played the cornet. Nielsen's mother loved to sing folk songs to him. Even though his parents thought he might not be a musician, he kept practicing. He wrote his very first pieces of music when he was only eight or nine.

Nielsen wrote many famous pieces of music during his life.

He is well known for his six large orchestral works called symphonies. He also wrote music for the flute, the clarinet, and the violin. Some of his music was inspired by his hard times at home. He had a difficult marriage with a sculptor named Anne Marie Brodersen. This period of his life is sometimes called his "psychological" period.

Today, Nielsen's music is part of the world's great musical collection.
