She was born in Denmark on May 20, 1882. Her family moved to Norway when she was only two years old. She is best known for her deep and detailed historical stories. These books helped people understand life in the Middle Ages. In 1928, she won the Nobel Prize for Literature. This is one of the highest honors a writer can receive. Her work remains important because she wrote about real human feelings.

Undset worked very hard to become a professional writer.

As a teenager, she had to work as a secretary. She held this office job for ten years. Even while working, she studied and wrote her own stories. She first tried to write about the Middle Ages at age 16. Later, she wrote a famous book called Fru Marta Oulie. This book was about life in the city of Kristiania. It was a bold story that made many people talk. After her books sold well, she could finally write full-time.

Her life changed many times as she grew older. She traveled to Rome, where she met a painter named Anders Castus Svarstad. They married in 1912 and had children together. Later, Undset moved to a small town called Lillehammer. She built a large house there made of traditional Norwegian timber.

She named her home Bjerkebæk. This house had a large garden with great views. It was the perfect place for her to focus on her art. She lived there while writing her most famous works.

Undset wrote massive stories that felt very real to readers. Her masterpiece is a trilogy called Kristin Lavransdatter. These three volumes were published between 1920 and 1922. They follow a woman from her birth until her death. She also wrote a four-part series called The Master of Hestviken. To write these, she studied old manuscripts and visited medieval churches. She wanted to make sure every detail was correct. This careful research made her an expert on history.

Her personal beliefs also played a big role in her life.

For a long time, she did not follow a specific religion. However, she eventually became a Catholic in 1924. This was a big deal because most people in Norway were Lutheran. Some people even criticized her for this choice. Undset used her writing to talk about her faith and her views. She stayed strong in her beliefs even when things were hard. She even fled to the United States in 1940 during World War II.
