He wrote many different things like novels, poems, and plays. People call him one of the "Four Greats" of Norwegian literature. This means he was one of the four most important writers of the 1800s. He lived during a time when Norway was finding its own voice. His stories helped people understand the spirit of their nation. He was known for being both modern and traditional in his work.

Jonas had a very interesting way of starting his career. He first studied to be a lawyer in 1857. He practiced law in a town called Kongsvinger. However, he did not have many clients there. This gave him extra time to write for newspapers. He also worked as an editor for a magazine called Illustreret Nyhedsblad. He spent years working hard as a journalist. This hard work helped him become a very skilled writer.

His life took him to many far-away places. Jonas was born in Hokksund in 1833. When he was young, he lived in the Arctic port of Tromsø. Later, he traveled to Rome and lived in North Germany. He also spent time in Bavaria and Paris. He even lived away from Norway for a long time. This period of living abroad is sometimes called a voluntary exile. He finally moved back to Norway in 1893 to live near Kristiansand.

Jonas wrote about many real parts of Norwegian life. He wrote about families and the rules for women in society. One of his most famous books is called Familien paa Gilje. It was published in 1883 and tells about an officer's family. He also wrote short stories about fishermen and old superstitions. These stories are in his collections called Trold. One story, "Elias and the Draugh," was even included in a book by Roald Dahl.
