He wrote short stories and plays that people still study today. Many experts call him one of the greatest writers of all time. He was also a trained physician by profession. Chekhov once said that medicine was his lawful wife. He viewed literature as his mistress instead. This meant he balanced his medical work with his passion for writing.

Chekhov's early life in Taganrog was quite difficult for his family. His father, Pavel, ran a grocery store in the port city. However, Pavel eventually went bankrupt after a contractor cheated him.

This left the family living in poverty in Moscow. To help his family, young Anton worked many jobs. He caught and sold goldfinches to earn money. He also did private tutoring and wrote short, funny sketches. He sent every ruble he could spare back to his parents.

As he grew older, Chekhov's writing became much more serious. He moved to Moscow to study at a medical university. He wrote daily sketches under many different names. One name he used was Antosha Chekhonte.

In 1888, his collection titled At Dusk won the Pushkin Prize. This award recognized his high artistic skill. He also wrote a famous story called The Steppe. This story showed a new, more mature style of writing. It helped him move from newspapers to literary journals.

Chekhov is most famous for his four great plays. These include The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters, and The Cherry Orchard.

His play The Seagull was first performed in 1896. Later, the Moscow Art Theatre produced it again in 1898. This helped make his plays very popular. His work was different because it focused on mood. Instead of big actions, he showed the hidden life within the text. This was a new way to tell stories on stage.

His way of writing changed how actors perform today. He wanted to show the realism of human life. This means showing how people truly act and speak.

He believed a writer's job was to state problems correctly. He did not think writers always had to solve them. This idea helped start the era of modernism in theatre. His work connects to the way we understand human feelings. Even now, his plays help us reflect on what it means to be human.
