He wrote many short stories, novels, and plays. People call him a father of expressionism in Russian literature. This means he helped start a new way of writing. His style mixed different ways of telling stories together. He used realism, naturalism, and symbolism in his work. He was a very talented and busy writer during the Silver Age. Many people in Russia saw him as a literary star.

Andreyev had a very busy way of working.

He first studied law in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Before he was famous, he worked as a court reporter. This job helped him learn about real life in courts and prisons. He also wrote poetry, but many publishers said no at first. In 1898, a newspaper published his first short story. A writer named Maxim Gorky saw it and helped him. Gorky told him to focus on being a writer instead of a lawyer.

His life changed quickly after he met Gorky.

In 1901, his first collection of stories sold 250,000 copies. He wrote stories like "The Wall" and "The Abyss." He was very interested in psychology, which is the study of the mind. This helped him create characters that felt very real to readers. He also wrote about the first Russian revolution in 1905. His stories from that time captured the spirit of the era.

Andreyev wrote many plays for the theater.

One of his most famous plays is "He Who Gets Slapped." He finished it in August 1915. It had its first big show in Moscow in October 1915. Later, it was performed on Broadway in America in 1922. This play became his most famous work all over the world. It has even been turned into films, operas, and musicals.

His stories traveled far beyond Russia.

In America, people thought he was like Edgar Allan Poe. This helped his work become very popular in English. Famous American horror writers, like H. P. Lovecraft, loved his books. They even kept his stories in their own libraries. Andreyev lived in Finland during his last years. He died there in 1919 from heart failure. His granddaughter later published a new collection of his stories in 1987.
