Even though he was a writer, he also held many official jobs. He worked as a government translator and a censor. A censor is a person who reviews books before they are printed. This job was sometimes hard and caused him trouble with his bosses.

Goncharov's life began in a very large stone manor.

He was born in Simbirsk in 1812. His father was a wealthy grain merchant and a mayor. The family home had huge barns filled with wheat and flour. After his father died, Ivan was raised by his mother and his godfather. His godfather was a former Navy officer who told him exciting seafaring stories. These stories likely helped spark his interest in the wider world.

Learning was a huge part of his life. He first studied at a private boarding school. There, he learned French and German and read many European books. He later went to the Moscow College of Commerce. He did not enjoy the strict rules there. Instead, he taught himself much of what he knew. In 1831, he joined Moscow State University to study literature and arts. He loved the lively debates at the university. He was even inspired by seeing the famous poet Alexander Pushkin give a lecture.

Goncharov's writing career grew through many different steps. He started by translating books and writing poems. His first novel, *The Same Old Story*, came out in 1847. It was about a young man who was too romantic. This book made him very famous. In 1852, he went on a massive journey. He traveled on a ship called the frigate *Pallada*. He visited England, Africa, and Japan. He wrote a very popular book about this trip.

He wrote much of it in just one month while staying in Marienbad. This book was published in 1859 and became a Russian classic. It was so influential that people created new words to describe the characters. He also wrote a third novel called *The Precipice* in 1869. Later in life, he wrote a memoir called *An Uncommon Story*. In it, he shared his feelings about his rivals. He felt they had taken credit for his ideas. He remained a major figure in literature until the end.
