Saltykov's writing often showed how hard life could be. He focused on the gap between noble ideas and real life. He wrote about the sadness caused by serfdom. Serfdom was a system where many people had no rights. He also wrote about how bad leaders could act. His famous novel, The Golovlyov Family, was published in 1880.
