The story follows a man named Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov. He travels through the countryside on many strange adventures. He meets many different people during his long trips. These characters represent the middle class of Russia at that time. The book uses humor to show how society works.

Chichikov has a very odd and mysterious plan. He travels to small towns to buy "dead souls." In the 1800s, landowners owned people called serfs. These serfs worked on the land for the owners. The government taxed landowners based on how many souls they owned.

Because census lists were not updated often, some serfs were dead. However, their names stayed on the official property lists. Chichikov tries to buy these names from the landowners. He tells them he will help them avoid paying taxes. He wants to use these names to get a large loan. This is his way to get rich quickly.

This story began with an idea from a friend. Alexander Pushkin suggested the plot to Nikolai Gogol. The novel is a satire of the Russian government. Satire is a way to use humor to criticize things. Gogol wanted to show the problems in the social system.

He intended to write three full volumes. Sadly, he burned the manuscript for the second part. He did this shortly before he died. Today, editors use his old notebooks to reconstruct the story. Some people believe the first part is already complete.

Chichikov meets many unique and funny characters on his path. He visits a widow named Mme. Korobochka. He also meets a bully named Nozdryov.

Other people include a silent man named Sobakevich. There is also a sentimental man named Manilov. One character named Plyushkin is a very unhappy miser. These people show different types of greed or silliness. Chichikov manages to buy about 400 souls before rumors start. People in the town begin to gossip about him. They even think he might be a famous person in disguise.

Many artists have used this story for their own work. Mikhail Bulgakov made a play for the Moscow Art Theatre. This play opened on 28 November 1932. A composer named Rodion Shchedrin wrote an opera about it in 1976. The BBC even made a radio version in 2006. That version featured Michael Palin as the narrator.
