Swift was an Anglo-Irish writer and a clergyman. The story follows an adventurous Englishman named Lemuel Gulliver. He starts as a surgeon and later becomes a ship captain.

The book is a satire. This means it uses humor to show the flaws in human nature. It also mocks the popular "travellers' tales" stories of that time. Many people read it today, from children to leaders in government.

Gulliver visits many strange and distant lands during his journeys. In the first land, Lilliput, he meets tiny people. They are much smaller than him and have many political arguments. One silly fight is about which end of an egg to crack.

In Brobdingnag, the situation is reversed. Gulliver is a tiny man living among giants. A farmer finds him and shows him to people for money. The queen even has a tiny house built for him to carry around.

Swift's writing uses these odd places to teach lessons. He visits the flying island of Laputa next. The people there study math and music but cannot use them for real life.

He also visits the land of the Houyhnhnms. These are wise, talking horses that live in peace. They live alongside savage, human-like creatures called Yahoos. Through these travels, Gulliver sees different ways that societies act and fail.

Swift worked on this book for a long time. It was likely finished by mid-1725. He may have had a copy made by another writer for safety. He did this because the book was a political satire.

He wanted to "vex the world" rather than just entertain it. When it was first published, many readers loved his clever ideas. However, some critics like William Thackeray thought his views were too harsh. They even called his work "blasphemous" because of how he described humans.

Today, the book remains a very important classic. It is one of the most printed books by an Irish writer.

People all over the world still study its themes in school. The story has been turned into many films and plays. It has also been shared through television and radio. Even though it is old, the lessons about society still matter. Gulliver's adventures continue to capture the imagination of readers everywhere.
