He wrote many different things, including novels, plays, and poems. He is most famous for his adventure novels. These books often took place during the late 1800s. He used the science and new machines of his own time to make his stories feel real. Many people call him the "father of science fiction" because of this.

He grew up near the river Loire. As a young boy, he loved watching the many merchant ships on the water. He even went to school in Nantes, where he was very good at geography and singing. Some people say he once tried to join a ship as a cabin boy. His father wanted him to study law instead of writing. Verne did go to Paris to study law, but his heart was in storytelling.

His life had some hard moments that shaped his writing.

When he was a young man, he fell in love with a woman named Rose Grossetière. She married someone else, and this made Verne feel very sad. This feeling often appeared in his books through characters who faced similar problems. He also dealt with health issues, like stomach pain and facial paralysis. Even with these struggles, he kept writing many books. He became a very important author in France and all of Europe.

Verne's work is still very important to readers today.

Since 1979, he has been the second most-translated author in the world. This means his books are printed in many different languages. He sits just below Agatha Christie in this big honor. In the 2010s, he was actually the most translated French author. Even a hundred years after he died, people still celebrate him. In 2005, France even declared it was "Jules Verne Year" to honor him.
