He wrote more than forty novels and many short stories. People often call him the "father of science fiction." This is because he wrote about amazing things before they existed. He imagined time travel, invisible men, and even alien invasions. He also foresaw things like space travel and satellite television. His stories felt real because he added small, everyday details.

As a young boy, he broke his leg in 1874. He stayed in bed for a long time to heal. During this time, he read many books from a local library. These books helped him dream of new worlds. Later, he worked as a draper's apprentice in Southsea. He worked thirteen hours every day in that job. These tough experiences later inspired his books about real life.

He spent many years learning and studying hard.

Wells won a scholarship to study biology in London. He studied under a scientist named Thomas Henry Huxley. He worked very hard to earn his degree in zoology. In 1890, he finally earned his Bachelor of Science degree. He also spent time as a teacher in different schools. One of his students was the famous writer A. A. Milne. Wells used his science knowledge to help him write his stories.

Many of his most famous books came out in the late 1800s.

His first big success was *The Time Machine* in 1895. He wrote *The Island of Doctor Moreau* in 1896. In 1897, he wrote about *The Invisible Man*. He also wrote the famous *The War of the Worlds* in 1898. Some of his other books were about social life in England. He was even nominated for the Nobel Prize four times. His many different books showed he was a very talented writer.

Wells was a thinker who cared about the whole world.

He had many strong ideas about how society should work. He was an outspoken socialist from a young age. He also cared deeply about helping people with health problems. In 1934, he helped start a charity for people with diabetes. This group is known today as Diabetes UK. Even though he is famous for science fiction, he was a very real person. His ideas and his books still matter to us today.
