Olaf Stapledon was a famous English writer and thinker. He wrote stories about science and books about how we should live.

He was born in 1886 in a place called Cheshire. He spent his first six years living in Port Said, Egypt. Later, he moved back to England to study and work. He was a man with very big ideas about the universe. His writing helped people imagine the far future and deep space.

Many famous writers and scientists studied his work for inspiration.

Stapledon's stories often showed amazing things that have not happened yet.

In his book *Star Maker*, he described a huge shell around a star. A scientist named Freeman Dyson later used this idea for his own work. In the book *Last and First Men*, he wrote about changing how life grows. He also wrote about terraforming, which means changing a planet to make it livable. His book *Sirius* tells a story about a dog with human-level intelligence. These ideas helped start new ways of thinking about science and life.

Before he was a full-time writer, Stapledon had a very busy life.

He worked in shipping offices in Liverpool and Port Said. During the First World War, he chose to be a conscientious objector. This meant he did not want to fight in the war. Instead, he worked as an ambulance driver in France and Belgium. He was very brave and won a medal called the Croix de Guerre. His time in the war made him want peace for the whole world.

Stapledon was a very smart man who earned a PhD in philosophy.

He studied at Balliol College, Oxford, and the University of Liverpool. He wrote a book about ethics in 1929 based on his studies. He also joined many groups that worked for peace and social change. He was a member of the Aristotelian Society and the Fabian Society. Even though he was a socialist, he had many different views. He loved to talk about how people could live better together.

His influence can still be seen in books and movies today.

Great writers like Arthur C. Clarke and C.S. Lewis were inspired by him. In 2014, he was put into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. Some of his stories are even being turned into films and music. He died in 1950 in Caldy, England. His family scattered his ashes on the cliffs of the Dee Estuary. This was a place he loved and wrote about in his books.
