Eugène Sue was a very famous French writer. He lived during a time of big changes in France.

He helped make the serial novel very popular. A serial novel is a story told in small parts. These parts were printed in newspapers for people to read. His most famous book was called The Mysteries of Paris. It was published in a newspaper from 1842 to 1843. This book was so popular that many other writers began to copy his style. People all over the world started writing their own "city mysteries" because of him.

Sue had a very busy life before he was a full-time writer. He was born in Paris in 1804. His father was a well-known surgeon in Napoleon's army. Sue actually worked as a surgeon himself. He helped soldiers during the French campaign in Spain in 1823. He also worked at the Battle of Navarino in 1827.

After his father died in 1829, Sue received a large fortune. This allowed him to settle in Paris and focus on his books. He used his experiences from the navy to write his first novels. These included books like Kernock le pirate in 1830.

His writing often explored very big ideas. Sue was interested in socialist ideas of his time. He wrote books that showed the lives of both rich and poor people.

Some of his books were quite controversial. They included scenes that were very violent. He also wrote stories that challenged the power of the church. One famous book was The Wandering Jew, which was a Gothic novel. He even wrote a series called Les Sept pêchés capitaux to show the seven deadly sins.

Sue also wrote many books about history.

His long series was called Les Mystères du peuple. This series covered many different times in history. One book was about slavery in the Roman Empire. Another was called The Silver Cross and was about Early Christianity. He wrote about King Clovis I and the Crusades in Palestine too. He even wrote about Joan of Arc and the French Revolution. These books were even translated into English and sold in New York.

Sue was also a man of politics. In April 1850, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly.

He had to leave Paris for a while after a political change in 1851. This time away from Paris actually helped him write even more. He died in Annecy-le-Vieux on August 3, 1857. Many people compare his success to another writer named Alexandre Dumas. Even today, his ideas live on in other books and movies. One famous saying, "Revenge is a dish best served cold," was first used in his book Mathilde.
