It is often called the first modern novel. Many authors call it the best novel of all time. It is also one of the most translated books in the world. The story is a satire of chivalric romances. A satire is a way of making fun of something. In this case, it pokes fun at old stories about brave knights.

The story follows a man named Alonso Quijano. He is a hidalgo, which means a member of the lowest nobility. He lives in a place called La Mancha. Alonso reads so many books about knights that he loses his mind. He decides to become a knight-errant to serve his nation. He changes his name to Don Quixote. He names his old workhorse Rocinante. He also chooses a woman named Aldonza Lorenzo to be his lady love. He calls her Dulcinea del Toboso.

Don Quixote travels with a squire named Sancho Panza. Sancho is a simple farm labourer. He brings wit to the lofty words of his master. One famous part of their journey involves windmills. Don Quixote believes these windmills are actually ferocious giants. He also thinks an inn is a grand castle. He even thinks a barber's basin is a legendary helmet. These mistakes lead to many wild adventures.

Cervantes published the book in two main parts. The first part came out in 1605. The second part was published ten years later in 1615.

In the second part, the characters know about the first book. This is a special way of writing called metafiction. This means the story knows it is a story. The second part also includes a duke and a duchess. They play practical jokes on the two travelers for their own fun.

This book has changed how people write stories. It influenced famous books like The Three Musketeers. It even gave us the word "quixotic." This word describes someone who is very idealistic. Mark Twain said the book changed how people saw old knight stories. Even today, people around the world still read it. It remains a central work in world literature.
