Tirant lo Blanch

arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Tirant lo Blanch is a famous story about a brave knight. This book is a masterpiece of Valencian and Catalan literature. It tells a tale of adventure and great skill. Many people love it because the characters feel very real. They are not just perfect heroes in a dream. Instead, they show many human feelings like sarcasm. The book is special because it feels like a real world.

The story follows a knight named Tirant from Brittany. He travels all across Europe on many quests. First, he joins knightly contests in England and France. Later, the Emperor of the Byzantine Empire asks for his help. Tirant must fight a war against the Ottoman Turks. He travels to the capital city of Constantinople to save it. He becomes a leader called a megaduke. He wins many battles in the Mediterranean and North Africa. Sadly, he dies just before he can marry a pretty heiress.

A knight named Joanot Martorell wrote this wonderful book. He lived in the 15th century. His friend, Martí Joan de Galba, finished the work after Martorell died. The book was first published in Valencia in 1490. This was an incunabulum edition, which is a very early type of printed book. Some people think the story is based on a real man. He might have been a leader named Roger de Flor. Roger also fought in Asia Minor and Greece for the Emperor.

This book is very different from other knight stories of that time. Most stories show heroes who are very calm and perfect. Tirant is different because he is full of life. He eats, sleeps, and even makes a will before he dies. The book uses many Catalan proverbs, which are wise sayings. It is also like an alternate history. This means the author might have rewritten history to change the outcome. This makes it a precursor to modern stories of that kind.

Many famous writers have praised this book through the years. A great writer named Miguel de Cervantes loved it very much. He called it a gold mine of recreation. He even said it was the best book in the world. He thought it was a treasure of enjoyment. Another writer, Mario Vargas Llosa, called it a total novel. This means the book creates its own entire reality. Today, people read it in many languages like French, Chinese, and German.
