Cervantes had a very difficult and busy life. He served as a soldier in the Spanish Navy infantry. In October 1571, he fought in the Battle of Lepanto. During this battle, he received three separate wounds to his chest. One wound made his left arm and hand useless.

Because of this, people called him "the one-handed man of Lepanto." He felt proud of his service even with his injury.

His life was full of many hard moments. In 1575, pirates captured him and his brother Rodrigo. They were taken to Algiers to be held for ransom. Cervantes stayed in captivity for five long years. He even tried to escape four different times.

Finally, in 1580, a religious group called the Trinitarians paid to set him free. He was finally able to return home to Madrid.

Cervantes was born around September 29, 1547, in Alcalá de Henares.

His father, Rodrigo, was a barber-surgeon. His mother was named Leonor de Cortinas. He had six siblings including brothers named Andrés and Juan. He published his first big novel, La Galatea, in 1585. Later, he published Don Quixote in 1605 and 1615. He also wrote poems like the Viaje del Parnaso.

We can still see his impact on the world today. His stories changed how people write novels forever. Many people celebrate his memory every year. In fact, the day he died is used for World Book Day. This is because he died in April 1616. He is buried at the Convent of the Barefoot Trinitarians in Madrid. His life shows how great art can come from hard times.
