Chichikov travels to many small towns. He has a very strange plan to get rich. He wants to buy "dead souls." In that time, serfs were people who worked on farms. Landowners had to pay taxes on these people. Sometimes, a serf died, but they stayed on paper lists.

Chichikov tries to buy these names from landowners. He meets many odd people on his trip. Some are greedy and some are very silly. One is a widow named Mme. Korobochka.

Another is a bully named Nozdryov. The book uses humor to show problems in society. Gogol called it a "poem in prose." He wanted to write three parts. Sadly, he burned the second part before he died. Modern books use his notes to help finish the story. Even though it is old, people still love this tale.
